Here Come the International Students

While American universities are busy building new campuses around the world, international students are flocking to their doorsteps. An Inside Higher Ed article (“Acceptances Up for Foreign Applicants”) looks at a new report released by the Council of Graduate Schools, showing a rise in the number of international applications to American schools. Not surprisingly, the number of international student acceptances has also grown. Among the report’s most telling statistics:

  • Students from Around the GlobeAmerican graduate schools accepted 11% more international applicants in 2011 than in 2010 (the largest percentage increase since 2006).
  • International student applications have also increased by 11%.
  • Acceptances for Chinese students have risen 23% this year (last year Chinese acceptances were already up 15%) – the largest gain for any country.
  • Interestingly, admission offers for Indian applicants to top tier schools have decreased, while acceptances are “up substantially” at institutions not among the top 100 ranked academic institutions.

The increase in the number of international students on American campuses may have something to do with new admissions policies and strategies to increase diversity. But it also reflects the fact that international students, particularly from China and India, put forth compelling applications. While this brings great tangible benefits for a diverse “college experience,” it also means that competition for admissions is increasing, both from talent at home and overseas.
