If you didn’t know, both holidays fall on the same day this year: February 14th. I’m especially excited about Chinese New Year. It’s the biggest holiday of the year for Chinese people. This is the day that my mom would make all the traditional foods with lots of lots of sweets….mmmm..chocolate covered pistachios. It’s traditional to give and receive red envelopes, which are like the Christmas equivalent of presents except they have money in them instead. But I’ll probably be doing a lot more giving than receiving given how old I am. And every Chinese New Year, I would participate/run in the Dragon Dance down in Chinatown. This year, I might not, depending on how my foot feels. It’s also tradition to get a haircut right before the holiday. The belief is new year, new haircut – you get the idea. And my hair has gotten quite long, especially after the surgery. I have to remember to get it cut Saturday. Anyway, those in the NYC area should definitely check out Chinatown around this time of year. There’s going to be a lot of things happening down there.
