GRE Test Volume Hits Record High in 2009

According to a recent ETS press release, last year’s GRE volume hit 675,000 global registrants, a 9% increase from the previous year. Graduate school admissions also increased last year.

When people are inspired to pursue graduate degrees—both MBA and others—the GRE becomes more popular. More students are applying to and attending graduate schools all over the globe, and the increased GRE numbers reflect that. The fact that many MBA programs now accept GRE scores also helped boost GRE volume. According to David G. Payne, VP and COO for College and Graduate Programs at ETS, students appreciate the flexibility that the GRE now offers, that they can take one test and then apply to both business school and graduate school using a single score.

Payne explains the appeal of the GRE to b-schools: “MBA programs are telling us that they need to broaden and diversity their applicant pools to meet the demands of today’s global economy. And they see accepting GRE General Test scores as a great way to reach hundreds of thousands of potential candidates that they could miss if they accepted only the GMAT scores.

The ETS press release also mentions that a revised GRE test will be released in 2011. For more information on the revisions, see either ETS or The Lantern on the subject.
