For fall break my husband and I went away to Quebec City and while I was there, I was thinking about how many great little getaways are available to us within a pretty easy drive from Hanover. I know our location is a concern to some prospective Partners. So, if you’re worried about Tuck being remote, know that it’s pretty easy to go somewhere for the day/weekend/week to get a city fix.
Daytripping: When you need a Target fix, a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte, a Banana Republic or a movie theatre that has more than 3 screens, only Manchester or Burlington will do. Each is about an hour-and-a-half drive. Burlington has the added bonus of a really great downtown, some killer food and even better beer. Ironically Burlington does not have a Burlington Coat Factory. But Manchester does.
Beantown: Whether you make a long day out of it, go to a concert or sporting event or go for the weekend, there’s no denying that our proximity to Boston is as clutch as Tom Brady in the snow. It’s just a little more than a two-hour drive down there and you’ve got everything you need from top-notch shopping, restaurants, an international airport and of course, the Sox. Dartmouth runs a bus back and forth to Boston several times a day, so you don’t even have to drive!
New York: If you’ve got more time, New York is about five hours away. There’s a Dartmouth-run shuttle there, too, and it runs once or twice a day.
Canada: Mounties, French-speakers and national healthcare… yes, the Quebecois are just a passport away! Montreal is about two-and-a-half hours and Quebec City is five. Both are charmingly Euro and offer le budget alternative to crossing the pond. Bonus: even more maple syrup than Vermont!
If a city fix isn’t what you’re after and you just need a change of scenery, there are countless charming little towns across New Hampshire, Vermont and New York where you can stay at a B&B, eat locally-sourced food and poke around in cute little shops for the weekend.
I love Hanover, and I’m sure you will too, but when you get the urge to get away, know that the options are not as limited as you might think.
