With the holidays right around the corner, it’s understandable that many people lack motivation for studying right now. However, it is important to keep up [subject:'gre' some studying] over the break so you don’t risk loosing what you have already learnt. So take (a small) breather, and review 5 basic GRE study tips:

  1. Don`t second guess yourself. Gut instinct is strong, and statistic have shown that your first choice answer is most often the correct one. So, once you’ve made your choice, resist the urge to back through the book and change.
  2. Watch your pace. The GRE is as much about being smart as it is about being fast. You’ll got about 1 minute per question for verbal, and 2 mins per question for the math section. That may seem like a lot when you’re thinking about the test, but perspectives change under pressure. Stay focused on the task at hand.
  3. Answer every question. Unlike some exams, you won’t lose any points for a wrong answer, so even if you don’t think you know the answer, take your best guess. You may surprise yourself.
  4. Spend more time on the harder questions. If you’re part of the majority of test takers writing the computer version of the GRE, you may not know that scoring is scaled. Harder questions are worth more marks than easier ones, so get through the easy questions as quickly as possible and save time for the trickier question. You may miss out on a few marks, but you score will be higher (assuming you answer the harder ones correctly) in the long run.
  5. Read things backwards – but only in the reading comprehension section. By reading the questions and answers before the text and jotting down some key points on your scrap paper, you mind will put up a mental flag of things to look for while you`re reading the passage. This will help you save time and help you score points!
