Friday Factoid: UCLA’s Unique Application

Perhaps due to the school’s close ties to Hollywood and the media and entertainment industries, UCLA Anderson has taken the lead of offering alternative essay questions to applicants – they are alternative because they request a non-written response to the question. Anderson began by offering applicants the option to submit a short audio recording of their answer to one essay question and in the 2009-2010 application season, began soliciting short video clips that answer one of two questions. Applicants also had the option to submit a 250-word essay in lieu of a video response.  If you’re considering applying to Anderson and have no idea how you might begin answering an essay question via video clip, visit the Anderson website to view seven audio essays from members of the Class of 2011. The video clips, some of which are titled “Punk Rocker,” “Technology Boom,” “Texas Cowboy,” and “I Am Neurotic,” were later animated to accompany the applicants’ audio responses.
