Esther’s Follies

Better than expected.

I’ve lived in Austin for more than four years, but have never made my way to Esther’s Follies.  It seemed like an attraction for tourists and a bit expensive for what it is.  But out-of-town guests have a way of getting me to Austin’s tourist destinations.

My brother drove down from Dallas on Thursday evening to attend a professional conference on Friday and enjoy a weekend in Austin.  One of his coworkers had recommended Esther’s Follies, so I made reservations–the things we do for family ;)   We made our way down to 6th Street and arrived at Esther’s about 20 minutes in advance of it’s start time.  The show was not sold out but there were only a few open seats.

We laughed, but we also groaned (the magician’s levitation trick was entertaining the first time, but when repeated with the kiddie pool prop and water feature it was plain awkward).  The humor was adult and mostly political in nature with a focus on local Texas events.  The show was performed in front of large ceiling to floor windows that look out onto 6th Street, so a lot of the fun had to do with the cast interacting with the action on the street.

I don’t have plans to go back, but it was a great way to entertain an out of town guest–especially one that wanted to take in the crazy scene by walking up and down 6th Street after the show let out.
