Do I need a car?

In speaking with prospective students, one question that Ihear frequently is “Do I need a car if I come to Tuck?”  The simple answer is: it depends.  I have provided a list of reasons to bring acar/buy a car or not to bring a car/not to buy a car.
Reasons to bring a car/buy a car:
1.  If youplan on living off-campus and you are not within walking distance to campus.
2.  Commuting to and from school will be a loteasier if your study group likes to meet late.
3.  The Hanover area is very beautiful and you wantto see the surrounding area on weekends.
4.  For trips to New York and Boston to visitcompanies.
5.  You love visiting gas stations for the aroma and ambiance.
6.  You want to give me a ride to class nextyear.
7.  If you own a vehicle that can betermed “exotic”.  When I mean exotic thecar has to go really fast and get something like .5 miles to the gallon.  If the answer is “yes” then please leave thekeys in my mailbox upon your arrival. Please, fill up the tank.
Reasons to not bring a car/not buy a car:
1.  You don’thave a car.  I guess I would considerthis an important reason.
2.  A good way to meet people who have a car.
3.  You don’t want to brush snow off the car.
4.  You don’t want to buy snow tires.
5.  Physically, you might not be able to drive yourselfhome after playing Tripod Hockey or Rugby.
6.  You don’t have a vehicle that meets therequirements of #7 in Reasons to Bring a Car.
Like I said the answer is “depends”.  One thing is certain. Fellow Tuckies with avehicle are always eager to help Tuckies without a vehicle.  If you don’t have a car, you will always havetransportation options thanks to the great Tuck community.
