In this post I want to talk about food. Specifically, the question many potential students have about Hanover: Is there anywhere good to eat?
Now, I can’t say that Hanover compares to a large city, but within 1/2 mile of Tuck there is a (relatively) large collection of restaurants and bars. For food, there are 2 Indian restaurants, 1 Thai, 3 pizza joints, 1 mexican place, 1 fantastic breakfast spot , a bakery, and several good “American” restaurants.
For bars, there’s Canoe Club (probably the most popular choice of Tuckies), 5 Olde (the dive bar in town), and–the primary topic of this post–Murphys.
Murphy’s is the oldest of the town bars and it’s an old-fashioned British pub in both fare and character. Former resident Bill Bryson, author of “A Walk in the Woods” and other books, used to live nearby and spent so much time at Murphy’s (as adopted Anglophile’s are want to do) that they named a seat at the bar after him.
But Murphy’s has recently updated their menu in an effort to go more upscale. To highlight this they have begun offering regular beer and food combination nights, sponsored by local breweries. (Quick fact: there are more breweries, per capita, in Vermont than any other state. New Hampshire is in the top 5.)
This past Thursday my fiance and I attended a dinner featuring Long Trail Brewery. I’ve posted the menu here, but suffice to say it was delicious. Local food, local beer, and a local pub that’s only a few hundred yards from my apartment. To me that’s perfection.
