After a bit of a false start last night, a technician came out to the apartment and managed to get my connection up and running.  It’s been just over three weeks since I disconnected in San Diego.  Three weeks without a personal internet connection was a bit of a long haul–there’s only so much I’m willing to do on the Firm’s computer!  So I’m quickly catching up on some e-errands and generally celebrating the fact that my last move-in to-do has been crossed off the list.

Some of you have asked how I like my new surroundings.  It’s a bit of a mixed bag so far.

Let’s start with what I don’t like:

  • It’s noisy!  I’ve never lived in a downtown environment full of ambient noise before.  Sirens. Shouting.  Car alarms.  Helicopters.  Freeway noise.  My new location has it all 24/7.  In time, I probably won’t even notice it, but for now it frustrates me that even with my apartment windows closed there’s no peace and quiet.  Pretty sure I haven’t experienced silence since I left San Diego.
  • It’s all concrete!
  • It’s dirty!
  • There are USC fans everywhere!
Okay, but seriously, it’s actually not all bad.  I have been surprised by how bothered I am by the lack of fresh, green open spaces, considering that I don’t view myself as an outdoorsy type.  Who knew!?!  My other complaints–not knowing my way around, loneliness, present not living up to the future I dreamed of in law school–will wash away with time.  (I hope.)
What I like:
  • Walking to work and grabbing a quick lunch at home when I have time for it.  My new dentist and optometrist are also within walking distance.
  • Entertainment options.  I’ve only scratched the surface, but there’s a lot more going on here than in San Diego.  Just this week, I went to a comedy club and the ballet.
Some of you have asked how work is going.  I have had some busy days, but also some slow days.  The jury is still out, but I’m hopeful.  I want this to work.
