Late last week, Clear Admit Senior Admissions Counselor and Tuck Business School expert Stacey Oyler dove into a detailed analysis of Tuck’s application essays as part of online MBA community Beat the GMAT’s “Write Like an Expert” series.
This most recent installment of the “Write Like an Expert” series is especially timely given Tuck’s fast-approaching October 13th Round 1 application deadline. Oyler, who served as assistant director of admissions at Tuck before joining Clear Admit’s team of admissions consultants, was a natural choice for Beat the GMAT’s new initiative given her in-depth knowledge of the Tuck community and its admission process.
“What a privilege,” said Beat the GMAT founder Eric Bahn in introducing Oyler. “We have someone who is a true insider who has seen what admissions is like from the decision-maker’s seat,” he continued.
In the hour-long online session, Oyler unpacked each of Tuck’s four essay questions one by one, providing detailed analysis of just what the admissions team is looking for as it reads applicants’ responses as well as specific tips on how applicants can hope to set themselves apart and avoid common pitfalls. She then fielded questions from viewers on a range of topics relating to Tuck.
Be sure to provide clear and explicit short- and long-term goals and make it clear that you understand why the MBA makes sense for you now, Oyler advised in her analysis of Tuck’s first essay question. Drawing on her experience as a member of Tuck’s admissions team, she warned that candidates who were vague in their goals were easy to eliminate as the admissions committee sought to assemble the next year’s class.
Oyler also made a particular point as part of her presentation to stress the importance of researching Tuck thoroughly before tackling the essay questions. “This is a school that is really sensitive to your answer to ‘Why Tuck?’” she said. “They really want to know that you understand their community and that you are going to appreciate being there. Doing your research is critical,” she stressed.
Dozens of prospective applicants tuned in to hear Oyler live, which contributed to a lengthy and informative question-and-answer session following her presentation. Beat the GMAT has since published a recorded video of the online event. To view it, click here.
