Campus Chronicles: MIT Fifteen

In this week’s Campus Chronicles installment, we’ll take a peek at MIT Sloan’s student newspaper, the MIT Fifteen, to see what’s exciting on Sloan’s campus.

Students in the 17 Market Lab recently had the chance to show off their final projects. In teams of four, students were assigned to a company that presented them with a specific marketing challenge. These companies included MKS Designs, Mercedes Benz, NPR, and Verizon, and presented the students with product to market such as iPhone applications, tomatoes, stem cells, furniture, and homemade cookies. After spending three months researching, interviewing, and working on this assignment, students had a chance to present their final marketing strategy or campaign. In an event opened by Market Lab professor Sharmila Chatterjee, each team had one minute to pitch their final strategy and their methods of developing this solution. Audience members were then allowed to examine each team’s poster, as well as listen to detailed explanations of the marketing solution. The Market Lab students eagerly await to hear which were the top five projects, as judged by five judges from the marketing industry and MIT faculty.

Second-year students are getting excited about their class trip, a week-long sailboat cruise around the British Virgin Islands occurring between finals and graduation. This tradition, more than 10 years old, allows approximately 100 graduating students the chance to travel part of the world together as a culmination of their experiences at Sloan. Each boat holds eight to twelve students, who will form a team, who in addition to competing in the Sloan Beach Olympics together, will also have the chance to learn how to sail and scuba dive as well as visit local ports.
