Business School Tips from a Current Haas School of Business Student, Scott Shapiro (Part 3 of 3)

Today’s Haas student profile comes from our friends at Beat The GMAT and Magoosh.com.  This is the final installment of a 3-part series published exclusively for Clear Admit.

I had the great opportunity to speak with Scott Shapiro.  Scott is currently a student in the fulltime MBA program at Haas.  Scott is interning at Facebook during the summer of 2010.

In Part One of the interview, Scott talked about why he decided to pursue an MBA and his approach to studying for the GMAT, among other topics.  In Part Two of the interview, Scott talked about his approach to essay writing and his experience as a Haas first-year.

In this final installment, Scott talks candidly about what has and has not met his expectations at Haas and his goals upon graduation.  Scott also gives his final tips for those currently applying to business school.

The following are some notes from Part Three of the interview.

How do you spend your time at Haas?

•    1/3 of the time is spent on classes and class work.
•    1/3 of the time is spent on extracurricular activities.
•    1/3 of the time is spent on recruiting.

How has Haas NOT met your expectations?

•    Haas feels a bit resource constrained.

What are your goals upon graduation?

•    Wants a product management or product marketing role in a technology company.
•    Company culture is very important to Scott.
o    Author’s note: I just read Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.  I highly recommend it for anybody who is interested in the importance of culture in organizations.

Do you have any other tips for people currently in the business application process?

•    Visit each school and try to get to know the current students and the culture of the school to assess fit.
•    Start your application process as early as possible.

I want to thank Scott for the interview.  I’d also like to give best wishes to those currently applying to business school.  As somebody who went through the application process and is a recent Haas graduate, I can tell you that the effort you put into your application is definitely worth it!
