Breast Cancer Awareness (w/Grandma’s Story)

Around this time last year, my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. By the time she found the lump, it had been four years since her last mammogram. FOUR! Her sister died of breast cancer, but–for reasons we still don’t understand–she had been skipping her annual mammogram.

She wasn’t too thrilled to undergo a mastectomy, but she was outright terrified of chemotherapy. There was a dearth of research regarding the incidence of side effects in her age bracket (something to do with most people letting cancer run its course at her age). So, the night before her first course of chemotherapy she couldn’t sleep. She told us that she thought the chemotherapy would kill her.

It didn’t. A year later, her hair has grown back and she is in fantastic health. Just last month she signed up for her first gym membership! After four years of skipped mammograms, we are so lucky that her breast cancer was detected before it was too late.
