Blanton Museum of Art

Today I visited the Blanton Museum of Art for the first time.  The Blanton is located on the corner of MLK Boulevard and Congress Ave., right across for the Texas State History Museum.  General admission is $9 (students may enter free).

You can view the collection in as few as one to two hours, depending on how long you like to soak up a work.  While there is a lounge for children, I would not recommend the Blanton for families with young ones (the Texas State History Museum, on the other hand, is kid friendly).  Sketching is permitted.

Visiting the Blanton prompted me to remember my frequent visits to the Cantor Arts Center during my years as an undergrad.  Cantor was a quiet space where many of my art history and studio art professors held class.  I loved to sit in the outdoor statute garden and sketch the Rodin sculptures.  It’s too bad I didn’t find similar sanctuary at the Blanton.  Better late than never I suppose!

I plan to head back to the Blanton on or after October 2nd, when a special exhibition of Impressionist works from the Walters Art Museum will open.  I love the Impressionist period, so this will be a special treat.  (My favorite movement is Northern Renaissance–will never forget the disappointment when the Northern Renaissance gallery was closed on the day of my visit to the National Gallery of Art–will have to head back one day.)
