Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley set a new record for the number of applicants for its class of 2010, California Watch reports. The school saw a 4.7 percent increase this year, with 8,317 applications compared to 7,940 last year. Furthermore, Boalt has experienced a 19 percent increase in applications from 2007 to 2010.
This rise can be partially attributed to the recession, but perhaps also to Berkeley’s improved loan forgiveness program, catering to those whose annual income is no greater than $100,000 and who work for government agencies or nonprofit public interest groups.
In addition, Berkeley is doing its part to assist students in this economic downturn. The school has doubled the number of Bridge fellowships for third-year students without jobs post-graduation, and has also built up its career development staff and initiated a post-grad career development program.
