Bangladesh – Day 3

It's day number three in Bangladesh, and today we met with some of the country's top officials in the health, economic, and education fields. My personal favorite included one of the managing directors of Gemcon Group, Dr. Kazi Anis Ahmed. He founded Bangladesh's only organic tea grower and has since introduced additional organic businesses to Gemcon's portfolio. In his spare time, he founded a private university in Dhaka which requires 1/3 of all academic curriculum to be based in liberal arts. This is especially unusual in a culture that generally prizes math, science, and business above all other disciplines. Very cool.

So business aside, my absolute most thrilling moment was riding in a motorized CNG (clean natural gas) rickshaw. Traffic lanes and red lights are mere suggestions here. I would basically equate the entire experience to an ongoing game of chicken…..only we were playing against buses and trucks. Hang on tight and keep your arms in the vehicle, people.

We're in Dhaka one more day, and then we're off to the village of Baripotol. Looks like some government officials will be staying in the guesthouse that we were originally slated for, which means we'll be staying with someone called Uncle Jamal. I can hardly wait!
