Awesome alums

I spent my fall break this week in DC. The purpose of my trip was twofold. 1) To see the sights of this great nation’s fine capital; and 2) To be reacquainted with my wife after the lost time of Fall A. The former was a resounding success and I was reminded time and again why, despite the apparent malaise currently enveloping the US, it is and will remain for the foreseeable future the greatest country in our world. I will explore this contention at more depth in a post another time. As for the latter purpose, I am pleased to report that Joana is still a remarkably pretty and outstandingly fun girl. I think she might be a keeper.

One highlight of my trip was the drive from Manchester Airport to Hanover this morning, when the fall colors were displayed in their full splendor. It set me thinking about some of the cool people in history who have made the journey north back to Dartmouth, with the same serene appreciation that they are fortunate to spend years in this heaven on earth. I thought it might be worth highlighting here a few of my favorite Dartmouth and Tuck alums:

Dartmouth
1) Robert May, creator of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.
2) Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, creator of the Grinch. (The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away!)
3) Daniel Webster, 19th Century statesman and opponent of President Jackson
4) Tim Geithner, Treasury Secretary
5) Hank Paulson, Geithner’s predecessor

Tuck
1) Paul Raether, the reason KKR should be called KRR
2) Frederick Winslow Taylor (father of scientific management and former Tuck professor)
3) Chris Miller, Animal House writer
4) Peter Georgiopoulos, shipping billionaire
5) Audrey Kania, founder of World Poker Tour

The most remarkable thing about these alums is their commitment to the school. More than 2/3rds of Tuck grads donated money to the school last year – way more than any other b-school. Every single alumni I’ve reached out to has been quick to respond and happy to give me their time. If you’re considering applying to Tuck, this should be a major draw. I don’t believe other schools can even come close to competing on this front.
