A generous anonymous gift will fund a new partnership between the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Barbara and Edward Netter Center for collaborative community development in West Philadelphia, the Wharton School announced last week.
A $3.16 million gift will establish the Wharton-Netter Center-Community Partnership, whose goal will be to create an effective model for university-assisted community development that can then be replicated in other cities both nationally and internationally.
Since its founding in 1992, the Netter Center has supported academically-based community service to improve quality-of-life issues in the West Philadelphia community. This new partnership will combine these efforts with the resources and analytical strength of the Wharton School and involve Wharton and other Penn students and faculty in curricular, co-curricular and research activities.
“The Wharton-Netter Center-Community Partnership will stand as a dramatic example of the potential for business to enact positive change on both local and global levels,” Wharton Dean Thomas Robertson said in a statement announcing the partnership.
Netter Center Director Ira Harkavy added, “This program will highlight how democratic, comprehensive university-community partnerships can powerfully advance research and learning, as well as the quality of life in communities.”
