An Encore Role for New Thunderbird Dean

The Thunderbird School of Global Management has tapped David Bowen to serve as the school’s new dean and chief academic officer, effective yesterday. It is a reprise of an old role for Bowen, who previously served as dean of Thunderbird from 2001 to 2005. Bowen will be taking over for Robert Widing, who stepped down from Thunderbird last week to take on a new role as dean of the Macquarie Graduate School of Management in Australia.

Bowen currently serves as Thunderbird’s G. Robert and Katherine Herberger Chair in Global Management and is an instructor both in the school’s degree and executive education programs. His most recent research focuses on global mindset and global leadership, an academic area that lies close to the school’s mission.

In his prior stint as dean, Bowen played an instrumental role in shaping the school’s 2010 strategic plan, according to a school press release. Among his accomplishments: diversification of the school’s academic programs, establishing a new performance management system and helping bring aboard the school’s current president, Angel Cabrera. This time around, Bowen will once again help the school launch a new strategic plan for the next decade, the school says.

Bowen plans to serve out this new term as dean until the summer of 2012 and the school expects to begin an external search for his successor starting next fall, a school spokeswoman said.
