All’s well that Ends Well

Often, if you ask someone what they remember about a movie or a play, they’ll tell you what happened in the beginning, and how it ended, but somehow the middle always seem to blend together. This happens with essays too, which may seem crazy, since that’s where the meat of your argument is, but it’s true. That is why you should always ensure your [info:'sat-essay' SAT Essay] has a strong conclusion. If you’ve been having trouble figuring out just how to make that strong conclusion, here are 3 tips to help you out.

  1. Propose a solution. Providing a solution is at once one of the more difficult ways to end your essay, as well as the most natural – especially if your essay has been discussing a problem. Proposing a solution to that problem is a natural way to end it. However, take care not to over simplify the problem as that will weaken the strength of your argument overall.
  2. Connect the conclusion to your introduction. Our last tip was the hardest way to (strongly) finish your essay, now here’s the easiest. Connecting your conclusion back to your introduction follows a time honoured formula: tell me what you’re going to say, say it, tell me what you said. A conclusion like this provides overall unity and shows flow in your essay, which is a solid choice, just not an exciting one.
  3. Show a connection to the real world. If our tips today were the three bears, this would be baby bear. Showing a connection between your points and the real world provides you a way to tie together your argument, as well as leave the reader feeling that the importance of your argument extends beyond the SAT. If you can inspire your reader to change, you’ll definitely be scoring bonus points (well, not literally, the SAT doesn’t offer those!)
