Advice from Harvard Business School Admissions Dean as October 1st Round 1 Deadline Nears

With Harvard Business School (HBS)’s Round 1 deadline just around the corner, Dean of Admissions Dee Leopold devoted a recent post on her Director’s Blog to some last-minute tips and reminders.

For starters, the deadline is October 1st at noon EST. “We’re serious about the noon deadline,” Leopold stressed, adding that any applicant who presses “submit” after the noon deadline will automatically become a Round Two applicant.

HBS will send an email response after it receives your application, and the response will state clearly whether you’re in Round One or Round Two. “If you call or email us with that question, we won’t know the answer – we will send you right back to check your email,” Leopold wrote.

Leopold also reminded applicants that her team will implement a change this year in the timing of decision notifications for Round One applicants, news she originally shared in an earlier blog post. All candidates invited to interview will receive invitations via email between October 15th and November 3rd. But under the new procedure this year, Leopold’s team will make its other decisions faster as well, which means that all other Round One candidates will also learn on November 3rd whether they have been denied admission to the Class of 2013 or invited to join the waitlist. Leopold hopes that this change will allow denied candidates more time to redirect their energies toward Round Two applications to other programs.

Leopold also urged Round One applicants to remind their recommenders about the October 1st noon deadline, which applies to letters of recommendation as well. “We make every attempt to add late-arriving recommendations to your file, but we make no guarantees,” Leopold cautioned.

Finally, in terms of standardized tests, an unofficial self-reported GMAT score is fine for the October 1st deadline. “We verify scores for all accepted candidates later in the season,” she wrote. But all standardized tests – GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, IELTS, PTE – MUST be taken before you submit your application…NOT afterwards.

Good luck everyone!
