Monday to Thursday was full of deliverables and left hardly any time to breathe. To compound matters, we had to meet company representatives on Friday morning and had classes all afternoon on Friday. Personally, Atlanta is one of my favorite cities in the world. It has everything you need: good food, great nightspots, community and lots of outdoor activities. And since I am in B-school, it is particularly relevant for me that most fortune 500 companies are located in Atlanta (besides NYC), along with loads of medium sized businesses, a fair share of non-profit organizations and endless opportunities. But I’m going to talk about the fun aspect of Atlanta.
Thursday Night: Kegs was especially good; everyone was relaxed and we got a chance to catch up with our classmates from sections B and C. But for me, the highlight was the long-awaited Roger Waters concert in Philips Arena. I am a big Floyd fan, so I had skipped a bunch of other concerts in Atlanta to get good seats for this one. Talk about “Willingness to Pay”! The concert was amazing, and it lived up to the high standards of other Floyd concerts.
Friday: Two company meetings, a strategy and finance class were now behind us and it was time to watch some hockey — the Atlanta Thrashers vs the Washington capitals. David, a big Capital fan, joined Mike, Tom and me at Philips Arena for the game. Apart from getting picked on by the locals for wearing the rival team jersey, David’s evening was made worse by the Thrashers’ 5-0 win. I intend to rub this in for the rest of the semester!
Saturday: Time for the “Beer Game” for the operations class. It was a great lesson in supply chain management. It also succeeded in convincing us to grab a few beers with our classmates. I met up with some non-school friends of mine and we went out to see the new “Harry Potter” movie, which was followed by some late night food at a mid-town restaurant.
Sunday: Time to sleep in. When I did get up at 10:00am, it was time for my run in the nascent fall weather. Atlanta is full of trees and natural beauty, which makes it one of the prettiest cities I have ever seen . The temperature that November morning was a comfortable 70, making the run even more fun. After lunch, it was back to books to prepare for Monday’s case discussion.
