A Love Letter

Dear Upper Valley,

We came to visit you this past weekend and I have to admit, I’ve taken you for granted. I know I’ve complained about your cold, wintry air; about your extreme distance from a commercial airport; and yes, more than once about your (albeit severe) lack of shopping. For ten long months, I didn’t know how good I had it.

And then I left you.

I left you for New Jersey with its sprawling malls, its proximity to 87 international airports (this is an estimate) and the chance to check out the new Mets stadium.

But I realize now it’s just a summer fling. Let’s be honest, New Jersey has nothing on you. And the Mets are terrible. You have forests and mountains and rivers; Jersey is awash with tollbooths. Your air is fresh and clean; New Jersey smells like… well, it smells like New Jersey. In Hanover this weekend, I ran into people I know… just bumped right into them on the street! That just doesn’t happen in New Jersey. Everyone here is in a car, listening to Lady GaGa at full blast, merging forcefully into my lane, blissfully unaware of other cars on the Turnpike.

Oh, I’ve missed you Upper Valley. And I love you. I promise to be more appreciative this year. Won’t you take me back? Please?
