A day in the life…

…Of a first-year in her second semester.

After an unexpected snow week in Atlanta—and a full week off of classes (yes, a week—we don’t use snow plows down here. We wait for the good ‘ol sunshine to do its magic)—Goizueta is back to being full of busy students, buzzing around the halls with classes, club meetings, interviews, and more. And I’m no exception.

So, in order to better depict what we Goizueta students are up to around this time of year, here’s a typical Tuesday in the life of me.

6:00 – Beep beep beep beep, just five more minutes

6:05 – I’m up! I grab my iPad, go through my morning emails, catch up on my marketing blogs, NY Times and noteworthy reading of the morning. And I check First Class (the program we use for any class-related emails, group conferences, document sharing, etc) for any new class postings from my professors. And then I get going.

6:45 – All ready. Grab my Wall Street Journal (I’m still stuck on reading the paper copy – there’s something about the smell and feel of reading a real newspaper that I haven’t gotten tired of yet), eat my super healthy brown sugar and cinnamon icing-covered pop tarts, and head out the door.

7:00-7:30 – Depending on how I feel that day, I can either take Emory’s Cliff shuttle (a free bus that runs all day and has a pick-up near me) or I can drive. Most of the time I drive though, since it’s a little more convenient, and it’s easier on those late school nights.

7:45 – Before classes begin, I do my printing for the day. Our 4th floor printing lab is very convenient, and I usually print out slides, homework, reading outlines, and any club documents I might need. And then I finish my morning emails.

8:30-11:15 – My first class begins at 8:30—Market Intelligence—followed by my 10:00 class, Goizueta Marketing Strategy Consultancy. Before I move on, I have to tell you a little more about GMSC—this year makes its 20th year. As Amit mentioned in a previous post, GMSC is a long-standing highly sought-after class that enables students to do a real-world marketing strategy project for companies. It’s quite a bit of work but well worth it, and it gives students great experience with structured problem solving, marketing research, project management, consulting and much more. This year…drum roll please…we’re excited to be working with The Coca-Cola Company, SAP, General Electric, Anisa International and Mohawk Industries.

11:15 – Lunch break. I take 20 minutes to eat in our Commons area, and then I head to a group meeting for 30 minutes, spend 30 minutes talking to the Director of our mentor program (I’m excited to have a mentor this semester!), and spend the remainder of my lunch break reviewing my notes for my next two classes.

1-3:45 – Two more classes… Social enterprise and Professional Communication

4:00 – Then I’m off to my Mid-Semester Module meeting. All students take 2 weeks off toward the beginning of March – this year it’s between February 24th and March 13th. We use the time to take mid-semester modules, which are one to two week programs that discuss a topic of interest—often combining culture and business (this year’s choices included several programs in Atlanta as well as Eastern Europe, India, Japan, and Nicaragua). I’m excited to be going to India this year. So, in this weekly meeting, we come together to discuss the book we’ve read for the week and any new itinerary logistics that have changed. This week’s book: Nine Lives: In Search of the Sacred in Modern India by William Dalrymple.

5:00 – Teen Leadership Summit meeting. I’m helping to hold an event that Goizueta Gives puts on every year for high school students. It’s a complete day of speakers and sessions–where the students are able to pick a track (Servant Leadership, Consulting Case Competition or Business Plan), and Goizueta MBA students teach them skills within the track. I’m leading the Case competition track, so I’m in the process of writing a case and organizing a schedule for the activities. Today’s meeting brought us all together to discuss logistics, since the day will be here before we know it – February 5th! Oh, and a new addition, I’m excited to announce that this year’s event will be a Zero waste event!

5:45-6:30 – Goizueta League of Blogging Efforts (GLOBE) meeting…and dinner

6:30-9:15 – last class of the day: Customer Relationship Management. I bet you can tell what my concentration is after 4 marketing-related classes and 1 social enterprise class today! One wonderful aspect of our schedule is that we complete all of our core classes in the first semester, so my second semester is packed with classes that will be directly useful to my internship experience.

9:15 – Time to head home. Get home, spend about 30 minutes writing and sending emails—wrapping up meeting notes, making to-do lists (I’m one of those types who loves to-do lists), and tying things up for the day.

10:00-1:00 – And then it’s time to read and prep for tomorrow’s classes. I usually finish reading around 1:00 am and am setting my alarm to get some sleep by 1:30am.

…and I’m ready to get another day started. Looking forward to a day of GMSC, my internship with Atlanta Beltline Partnership, client meetings and maybe some yoga tomorrow!
