Your MBA essay content is obviously the most important aspect of your essays, but if your thoughts and ideas are muddled by bad writing, then the adcom readers will have a very hard time focusing on what you are trying to say. The importance of good grammar and a coherent writing style can’t be overstated—without them, your MBA essay content will be lost, and, despite your intelligence and good intentions, you will be written off as a sloppy, careless person.
Here are a few tips to help you clean up your business school application essays so that your true pearls of wisdom (your essay content) will be conveyed brilliantly and clearly.
1. Vary your sentence structure. Subject, verb, object, subject, verb object, subject, verb, object can get a little tiresome after a while. Mix simple sentences with compound sentences to create an essay that reads more melodiously and less monotonously.
2. Don’t repeat yourself. In most cases, you have a limited amount of space. Make every word count.
3. Use a thesaurus…sometimes. Yes, you should make sure you’re not being repetitive by using the same words over and over again. No, you should not use words that are highfalutin for which you don’t know the meaning. Your use of the thesaurus should not be noticeable—only use words that are within your vocabulary.
4. Steer clear of the passive voice. Better to say, “The applicant submitted her MBA essays,” rather than “The MBA essays were submitted by the applicant.”
Finally, the best way to determine if an essay is written well, is to read it aloud, slowly, to hear that it sounds good. Your ear will likely pick up errors that your eyes miss.
