30 x 30: Visit with College Friends

I’ve been so wrapped up in the agony of my slow start at the firm that I haven’t blogged about 30 x 30 in a long while, despite the fact that I’ve checked a few more items off the list.  Here’s to getting back on track!

When I sat down to compile my 30 x 30, a list of thirty goals to complete before the end of my 30th year, some goals seemed more daunting than others.  I wasn’t sure whether I’d be able to budget for some goals (e.g., New Zealand) and others seemed near impossible due to scheduling issues beyond my control (e.g., sitting for the Texas Bar Exam–a goal that will have to be bumped to next year’s list).  When I included “visit with college friends” on my list, I just wasn’t sure if I would be able to get my college drawmates in the same place at the same time.  We are spread out across the country, doing very different things–we are nurses, teachers, doctors, lawyers, directors, and businesswomen in NYC, SF, Minnesota, and LA.  Little did I know at the time, but four of them would be getting married between the time I compiled my 30 x 30 list and the end of my 30th year.

With so many weddings on the calendar, I’ve been able to visit with my college friends more this year than any other year since I left Palo Alto.  First, we all met up in NYC for C’s greek orthodox wedding.  Next, we were scheduled to meet up in Vermont for M’s wedding.  Unfortunately, I didn’t make it to Vermont because of the SD to LA transition, but M was very gracious about it and her special day was captured in lots of beautiful photos that I’ve had the chance to see.  Then, we met up in Calistoga for a bachelorette weekend and a couple of us made it to a bridal shower in LA.  Finally, in a few months, all but one of us, who is expecting her first baby and won’t be able to travel, will be together again at A’s wedding in Sonoma.

I’m not as close to my drawmates as they are to one another because I spent a fair amount of time away from the group–in the dance studio and living in the sorority house–during the last couple years of college.  Nonetheless, every time I visit with them I feel revitalized.  Their creative, but intellectual energy and raw kindness is extraordinary.  Visiting with them leaves me happy and inspired, which is why I wanted to make it a priority to see them this year.  How lucky I was when the wedding invitation started showing up in my mailbox.  Luckier still to get to live with them for a couple of years during college!
