2011 Senior Match Day Results





There have been a number of articles recently on the success of this year’s “Match Day.” The following findings are collected from these three articles: “Senior Match Day Results; Residencies Up In Pediatrics, Family Medicine,” “For Second Year, More U.S. Medical School Seniors Match To Primary Care Residences,” and “In ‘Match Day’ Event, More Medical Students Pick Family Medicine For Residencies.”

  • The 2011 Match offered first-year residents 23,421 positions, and second-year residents 2,737 positions, 638 more positions than in 2010. 22,386 first-year positions (95%) were filled.
  • Residencies in family medicine went up 11% this year.
  • Positions in internal medicine rose by 8%.
  • The fields of anesthesiology, neurology, and emergency medicine also increased among U.S. med students.
  • Pediatrics saw a 3% increase this year; of the 2,437 pediatric residency positions, 98% were filled on Match Day.
  • More than 90% of positions in dermatology, plastic surgery, orthopedic surgery, thoracic surgery, otolaryngology, vascular surgery, and radiation oncology were filled on Match Day by U.S. seniors.
